At its heart, the “Too Asian” controversy is about weighing the benefits to the community against the rights of the individual. That balancing act extends far beyond the campus, and will continue to trouble both Canada and the United States, as the disadvantaged of the two nations struggle to achieve more just, equitable, and democratic societies composed of diverse communities of people.
David Weinfeld is a doctoral candidate in New York University's joint program in History and Hebrew and Judaic Studies. He is also a graduate student fellow at the Center for Jewish History in New York. Born and raised in Montreal, David lives in Manhattan with his wife, Julie Weinfeld, and their cat, Rabbi Mordecai Catlan.
