Khubchandani examines drag in the context of race, ethnicity, location, class, and physical abilities. This chapter discusses the ballroom scene, the concept of "realness" in regards to accurately portraying a certain identity and how this acts as both an art form and a tactic to survival. Khubchandani explores how colonial concepts of race, gender, and class inform ideas of who and what can be deemed drag. He provides insight into how to reconstruct our perceptions of drag to more inclusive.

Kareem Khubchandani is an Associate Professor at Tufts University. He is the author of the award-winning Ishtyle: Accenting Gay Indian Nightlife, co-editor of the Lambda Literary-nominated Queer Nightlife, and curator of Critical Aunty Studies. He also performs as LaWhore Vagistan, everyone’s favorite South Asian drag aunty.
