Canadian Lives

Canadian History through the Lens of Individual Lived Experiences

For courses covering the history of Canada, this collection of new and recent readings from Canadian authors provides an exploration of the social history of Canada from a variety of perspectives.

Readings in this collection look beyond the traditional historical framework of famous names and dates, instead providing insight into conflicts, social movements, and trends by exploring the lives of the people who experienced them.

In Black Loyalists in New Brunswick, Stephen Davidson provides biographies of some of the first black men and women to arrive in New Brunswick. In two chapters from James E. Candow’s The Invisibles, socioeconomic divisions in 19th century Newfoundland are explored by contrasting the daily lives of officers and enlisted men in the Royal Newfoundland Company.

By exploring Canadian history through the eyes of relatable, everyday people, readers are able to develop a broader understanding of the trends and events that have shaped Canada throughout its history.
