This chapter looks at the legacy of popular resistance movements in our history and asks how a species that for most of its existence was largely cooperative, egalitarian and peaceful could have turned to the competition, inequality and war of the world today. It points to the movements around the globe for social justice related to class, gender, ethnicity and the environment and also social experiments in the form of ecovillages, and particularly in the social and solidarity economy of cooperative and non-hierarchical institutions that seek to create an alternate model of social relations, which may bring us back to the values of our early ancestors.
