Allan E. Blakeney

Allan Blakeney was premier of Saskatchewan from 1971 to 1982. He served as a senior civil servant in Saskatchewan before entering politics and was a cabinet minister in the governments of Tommy Douglas and Woodrow S. Lloyd. As minister of public health, he played a crucial role in the development of medicare. On his retirement from political life in 1988, he was appointed Bora Laskin Professor of Constitutional Law, Osgoode Hall Law School (1988-90). In 1990, he was appointed the Inaugural Law Foundation of Saskatchewan Professor at the College of Law, and after completing his term Mr. Blakeney has remained at the college as a visiting scholar. In 1982 he was appointed to the Privy Council of Canada. In 1992, he was made an officer of the Order of Canada and in 2000 was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. In 2001, he was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
