Cathy Crowe

Cathy Crowe calls herself a “street nurse” to remind politicians and the public that the extent of homelessness and inadequate housing in this country is obscene. For the past eighteen years she has been nursing and organizing — on the streets and in shelters, drop-ins, and outdoor squats. She believes that a national housing program is as vital to the health of the nation as medicare. In 1998, she co-founded the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, which declared homelessness in Canada a national disaster. She is a recipient of the Atkinson Charitable Foundation’s Economic Justice Award. Cathy Crowe is co-author of Dying for a Home: Homeless Activists Speak Out (Between the Lines Press, 2007).
