From: Tar Sands Showdown

Chapter 6 discusses the many ways in which the development of the tar sands has become a caldron that is brewing with social conflicts and tensions: (a) social conflicts: ranging from the community problems facing Fort McMurray, Upgrader Alley, and Fort Chipewyan, to the growing rich-poor gap in Alberta, the royalty rip-off, and the use of cheap labour; (b) energy insecurities: the availability of sufficient oil and natural gas supplies to meet needs in the rest of the country due to increasing exports; (c) US military links: the role that Canada has come to play in fuelling America’s military operations through the export of tar sands crude.
