Struggling to Survive
The New Democratic Party and Labour in the Neoliberal Era
From: Rethinking the Politics of Labour in Canada
$2.10
Will neoliberalism remain hegemonic in a world recovering from a pandemic and prone to populist reactions to free market neoliberalism? In 2020, business acceptance of massive deficits, government’s central role in promoting public health and economic stability, increased awareness of widening social and economic inequalities and celebrations of frontline workers appeared to challenge contemporary orthodoxies. Yet the resilience of neoliberalism cannot be underestimated, as shown by the 2015 experience of the Greek Syriza government, which challenged austerity but ultimately capitulated to European Union fiscal requirements.
