In this chapter, Alh’jooj discusses her mother, Ummi, a Bedouin woman in an Israeli hospital. Set within the Bedouin communities of Israel, the narrative examines the weight of patriarchal expectation as Ummi’s mother-in-law, Jidatee, threatens to replace her.
