Defund to Abolish

A 400-Year Struggle against Policing in Montreal

New!

From: Disarm, Defund, Dismantle

$1.20

In Defund to Abolish the Montreal Defund the Police Coalition examine the long history of resistance to policing in Montreal. They argue that the problem with policing today is not too little reform, but instead policing itself. The chapter examines how police abolition benefits communities by helping to create new solidarities among communities, who are harmed at once by the police as well as the hierarchical and oppressive social order that the police abet and help to create among racialized and/or working-class Canadians. The chapter discusses topics such as reinvesting in community care, harm prevention expansion, and transformative justice.

Defund the Police Coalition (Montreal)

Defund the Police Coalition (Montreal) was formed in June 2020, following the police Killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in the United States and Chantal Moore and Regis Korchinski-Paquet in so-called Canada. The initial members of the coalition created a set of ten demands, meant to combat police racism and violence and create a new vision and practice of collective safety in Montreal. The coalition now includes over 80 members and an evolving set of working groups devoted to specific coalition activities and objectives.
