A majority of the Supreme Court of Canada declared that the federal Crown failed to implement the land grant provision in section 31 of the Manitoba Act, 1870 in accordance with the honour of the Crown, while a dissenting opinion determined that the honour of the Crown was inapplicable on the facts and in any event any claims arising from it would have been barred by expiry of limitation periods.
