To understand how we find ourselves in such a situation of ecological precarity requires delving into the past. But our intents are fraught from the start. Any attempt to retell human history is held back by the limits of our evidence: the imperfections of written records and the oblivion of oral history. Indeed, much of our archaeological record is so fragile, scattered and sparse that it can be molded to a range of conclusions.
