This chapter starts with a look at the assumed relationship between power and violence, and introduces and dissects a concept called power-over. Power-over is rooted in violence or punishment, involves clear group distinctions and is embedded in most of our institutions. This chapter looks at perceived versus real effectiveness of power-over mindsets in various contexts.
