A majority of the Supreme Court of Canada, on appeals from constitutional references initiated in three provinces, held that as a matter of law the federal government was able to amend the Constitution without the consent of the provinces and in spite of the objection of several of them in such a manner as to affect both the status and legislative competence of provincial legislatures.
