Aboriginal peoples in Canada are presently engaged in a process of decolonization, in the restructuring of their societies through self-government and in the reaffirmation of their knowledge and worldview within the discourse of mainstream society. Central to this project is the need to reform the formal post-secondary education system in a way that will address these goals and aspirations.

Barbara Walberg

Barbara Walberg is professor at Negahneewin College of Access and Community Development at Confederation College, Thunder Bay, where she has taught for twenty-one years. Presently, she is the coordinator of the Aboriginal Law and Advocacy Program, as well as member of the development team for the Indigenous Leadership and Community Development Degree of Applied Learning. Barbara Walberg has an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, and a teaching certification in both British Columbia and Ontario. She recently completed her MA in Integrated Studies at Athabasca University, Alberta in June 2007. Her research interests include Community Studies, with a focus on the Aboriginal issues of Northwestern Ontario.
