Survivors Stories

Bertin

From: The Hope that Remains

$2.50

Bertin was an adult during the genocide, and so remembers it very clearly. In 1990, when the RFP arrived in Rwanda, Bertin was arrested and jailed because of his job in hydroelectricity, ultimately for six months. He was able to come to Canada as a refuge in 1993, before the main genocide. As the genocide started, he began work in BC in a tree-planting company. It was only later than he learned his entire family was killed. That began a long period of survivor’s guilt.
