In Chapter 1, Nyla Matuk reflects on her own experiences of growing up Palestinian in Canada. Matuk explores different episodes from her own life while placing them into the historical narrative, illustrating the many challenges she had to face growing up with an identity that the Canadian state actively worked against and treated with hostility. The chapter explores topics including anti-Palestinian racism in Canada, the role of media and the education system in spreading anti-Palestinian sentiment, Canadian identity and multiculturalism, activism, McGill’s Students for Palestinian human rights, and Orientalism.

Emily Regan Wills is an associate professor of comparative politics at the University of Ottawa. She is the co-director of the Community Mobilization in Crisis project, which develops and implements innovative multilingual digital pedagogical tools for teaching community mobilization skills in the Middle East and elsewhere.
