In Chapter 1, Nyla Matuk reflects on her own experiences of growing up Palestinian in Canada. Matuk explores different episodes from her own life while placing them into the historical narrative, illustrating the many challenges she had to face growing up with an identity that the Canadian state actively worked against and treated with hostility. The chapter explores topics including anti-Palestinian racism in Canada, the role of media and the education system in spreading anti-Palestinian sentiment, Canadian identity and multiculturalism, activism, McGill’s Students for Palestinian human rights, and Orientalism.

Nyla Matuk is the author of two books of poetry: Sumptuary Laws and Stranger, and the editor of an anthology, Resisting Canada. Her poems have appeared in The Poetry Review, The Walrus, The New Yorker, and other journals and anthologies in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. She is the recipient of a Yaddo Fellowship and the Mordecai Richler Writer in Residence from McGill University.
