Kyle Rae was born in Ottawa in 1954, raised in Oakville, and came out while in grad school in England. He returned to Toronto in time for the 1981 bathhouse raids. Rae organized the first annual Pride that year, and continued until 1987, when he became executive director of 519 Church Street Community Centre. Elected as Toronto’s first openly gay City Councillor in 1991, Rae represented Ward 6 and then Toronto-Centre Rosedale until retiring from public office in 2010. He now teaches at Ryerson University, precariously
