Two Jews, Three Opinions: Jewish Canadians’ Diverse Views on Israel-Palestine

Part II: Insights for Possible Futures

New!

From: Advocating for Palestine in Canada

$2.00

In Chapter 5, Diana Ralph examines the differing positions on Israel-Palestine between Jewish Canadians. In this chapter Ralph analyzes the results of two groundbreaking 2019 surveys of Jewish Canadian opinions about Israel/Palestine, Canadian government policies towards Israel, and what Jews consider to be antisemitic. Despite the Canadian government’s unwavering support for Israel on account of the wants of Jewish Canadians, these survey findings reveal that many Jewish Canadians, like public opinion in general, are deeply critical of Israeli government policies and do not support Canada’s condemnation of bds supporters. They also show that almost half (48 percent) of Jewish Canadians believe that “accusations of antisemitism are often used to silence legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies. The chapter examines this disparity by examines four popular arguments the Canadian government and pro-Israeli politicians make to justify their support for Israel which reflect their own ideas and not that of Canadian Jews.
