The first chapter of Indigenous Women’s Theatre in Canada articulates the purpose of the book in light of continued violence against Indigenous women and girls, to demonstrate the links between colonization, violence and contemporary Indigenous women’s literature and drama works. Specifically, the author focuses on the following themes: the "discovery" myth driving early colonizers, misrepresentations of Indigenous women in stories, the stereotyping and perpetuation of gendered violence through art, decolonial imagery and resistance through art, identity politics and how drama can be used in decolonization and recovery for Indigenous women.
