In Chapter 2, Sheryl Nestel examines the legitimacy of Israel’s existence, the larger history of European Jewish whiteness, and Israel as an ally and trusted member of the larger western hegemony and its control over the world. Topics discussed include Jewish identity, colonial tropes of civility and colonization, Zionism, Racism towards indigenous Palestinians and the establishment of Jewish whiteness, the 1967 Six Day War (Arab-Israeli War), muscular Judaism and the "muscle jew", the Canadian Jewish Congress, and the Committee for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA).

Sheryl Nestel

Sheryl Nestel, PhD (oise/U of T), has been active in Palestinian rights movements in Canada, the United States and Israel-Palestine for over five decades. She served eleven years on the Steering Committee of Independent Jewish Voices Canada and is involved in their research program and other projects. She retired in 2012 from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, where her research and teaching focused on issues of race and racism in a transnational feminist and anti-colonial framework.
