Beyond the Social Model of Disability
Engaging in Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice
From: Doing Anti-Oppressive Practice
$1.90
This chapter addresses anti-oppressive social work practice with people with disabilities. The authors highlight the importance of language in the social construction of disability and expanding the social model of disability, offer an AOP framework for social workers to engage with people with disabilities at the individual, family and social levels, and suggest that AOP interventions require an awareness of the context in which persons with disabilities live. Finally, they address issues of internalized oppression and structural barriers that limit accessibility.
