The Supreme Court of Canada unanimously held that third-party spending limits imposed by the Canada Elections Act were so low as to infringe free expression under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but six of the nine judges upheld the restriction as a reasonable limit demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
