From the Hip

Chapter 2

From: Decolonize Hipsters

$3.20

In From the Hip, Pierrot explores the etymology of the word ‘hip’ and how it has been used over the centuries, before delving deeper into the larger history of white hegemonic culture appropriating and commodifying black art and culture, a phenomenon which blocks Black people from their own cultural capital. The chapter focuses on the history of hipsters as being grounded in historical and structural racism in how whiteness is maintained as as a socio-political norm by stealing from Black folk and paradoxically pretending that merely recognizing Black contribution was enough to justify erasing them.
