The fourth chapter of George Manuel’s biography details his journey from a person who recognized an important opportunity for defiance of government control of First Nations peoples and began speaking up in public meetings, with community support. He began community organizing events and letter writing, investing in his speech-giving and writing skills. He also began travelling all over BC to other First Nations to understand their needs and perspectives. Manuel also began being mentored by Andy Paull, who had a strong sense of federal issues for First Nations people, and founded the North American Indian Brotherhood, which led to an expansion of his activism network. Manuel became president of NAIB in 1959.
