In chapter 15, Heather Carter unpacks the whiteness of her skin which has led to her unfailingly being perceived as a white settler, despite her own identity as a Métis woman. The chapter explores the story of Carter’s identity, Indigeneity and success and impact of this “passing” on herself and community.
Heather Carter is a Métis educator and scholar with a demonstrated history of successful instruction in Saskatchewan classrooms. Her graduate studies in education focused primarily on investigating and improving the educational experiences of Indigenous and racialized students in Saskatchewan — indeed learners in general — through the design and promotion of curriculum that elevates diversity and inclusion and encourages cross-cultural and anti-oppressive instruction. Heather is a dedicated mother, community-minded volunteer and passionate advocate and activist in the quest for equity in education.
