Part three of Saving a Grand Old Lady focuses on the life of Louise Bethune (born Jennie Louise Blanchard), one of the “exceptional women” admitted into the architecture profession during the twentieth century. This chapter focuses on the attempts to preserve and restore the surviving historical architecture of Buffalo after years of decline and frequent demolition of heritage sites. This chapter also includes interviews with the community members involved with the 43-Million-Dollar Restoration of the Lafayette Hotel, the last remaining building Bethune designed.

Tania Martin is a professor at the Université Laval School of Architecture in Québec City where she has held the Canada Research Chair in Built Religious Heritage since 2005. She has published essays in scholarly journals on architectural history and North American religious institutional structures. She lives in Québec City.
