Part two of Sister with a Hammer focuses on the life of Mother Joseph (born Esther Pariseau) a Catholic nun who is representative of the nameless pioneer women who helped to build nineteenth century North America. This chapter focuses on her work and influence in the Washington region from the 1860’s until her death in 1902. The chapter explores her role in the designing and building of St. Vincent’s and Providence Hospitals in Portland, Providence Hospital in Seattle, and the Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, as well as her legacy after her death.
