White Plague, Red Victims

1932-1954

From: Brotherhood to Nationhood

$1.20

The third chapter of George Manuel’s biography begins with his diagnosis of tuberculosis and his stay at the Coqualeetza Preventoria for treatment. It also explores the impact of the illness on his personal development, avoiding the worst impacts of residential schools, and being given time for personal reflection. He also met his wife Marceline Paul in this period of recovery, and started a family. The chapter traces his family’s economic challenges as a result of racism and exclusion from jobs, as well as Manuel’s beginning involvement in advocating for indigenous rights and wellbeing at a federal level.
