Roman Catholic missionaries and the Canadian government shared a vision: to see Native people, through residential schooling, abandon their cultural heritage and their nomadic hunting and fishing lifestyle, and adopt the presumably civilized ways of Europeans, including their religion, Christianity. It was a fatal plan and the author explains why.
