In this chapter, Livingstone examines modes of thought that serve to shape peoples’ views of social reality, compare feudal and capitalist modes of thought and dominant ideas, and point to some of the dominant and contesting political ideas that may be guiding class consciousness today. The objective of this chapter is to establish some specific terms of reference for estimating the extent of acceptance of general bourgeois ideas and both contradictory subordinate and radical alternatives among classes in contemporary advanced capitalist formations.
