A majority of the Supreme Court of Canada held that a citizenship requirement in the provincial Barristers and Solicitors Act breached equality rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The dissenting opinion, while agreeing that there was an infringement, found the citizenship requirement to be a reasonable limit demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
