Arrival and Reception: Hungarian Refugees, 1956–1957

From: The 1956 Hungarian Revolution

$4.29

The government of Canada is well organized to recruit, screen, transport, and receive large numbers of immigrants. The situation was not different in the mid-1950s. In 1956, 165,000 immigrants landed in Canada and the following year the number reached 282,000.1 After some hesitation, Ottawa unconditionally threw open the gates of Canada to the Hungarian refugees.[…] But once the 1956 figure for unemployment jumped from 3.2 percent to 6.5 percent in 1957, the Hungarian refugee movement was restricted in order to protect wages and employment.
