Chapter Five focuses on the division between the ideologies of Arabism and Islamism which arose in the Arab States during the mid-twentieth century. Arabism spawned Arab socialism, which promoted women’s rights, sought to overcome discrimination based on religion and sect, and implemented programs to reduce economic inequality. Islamism, on the other hand, is more socially and economically conservative than Arabism, tilting to the political Right. This chapter discusses how these movements took hold in Egypt, Iraq, Libya, and Syria and how the West favoured one over the other to help create unrest and division in the region.
