French, Female, and Foreign: French Canadian Children’s Literature in German Translation

Once upon a time, German translations of French Canadian children’s literature were off to a promising start: between 1947 and the late 1950s, more than twenty little books featuring gingerbread men, magic cauldrons, strawberry fairies, and noble savages were translated from French into German and illustrated with naive, brightly coloured pictures. Lucille Desparois, lovingly called “Tante Lucille” by her admiring audience, was the author of these modern fairy tales that blend literary techniques from the moral tale with oral storytelling traditions of French Canadian folklore.

Nikola von Merveldt
Nikola von Merveldt is an assistant professor in the Department of Modern Languages of the Université de Montréal. She has an MA in European literature (Cambridge University) and a PhD in comparative literature (Munich University). Her research in children’s literature focuses on text-image relations. She is a member of the interdisciplinary research group Interacting with Print: Cultural Practices of Intermediality (1750–1850) and works mainly on eighteenth-century French and German juvenile literature. She is also a regular contributor to the International Youth Library in Munich.
