On the one hand, the Depression era produced a theatrical encounter between modernism and socialism on stages organized by the Canadian left. On the other hand, this convergence catalyzed multiple aesthetic and ideological transformations, and thus it demands readings that can account for the stages of socialist theatre over the course of the decade.
