Shirley Douglas was born to Irma and Tommy Douglas in 1934 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. It was there that Shirley witnessed the birth of hospitalization and medicare and has since been determined that Canadians not lose what was so ferociously fought for. She is a celebrated television, film, and stage actress, and renowned social activist. She has traveled the continent speaking in church basements and local libraries, at large public rallies, and international forums, on behalf of the Canadian Health Coalition. In Toronto, she founded a citizens’ group committed to protecting not-for-profit health services. In October 2003, she received the Order of Canada, and in 2004 she received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto.
