The second chapter of George Manuel’s biography outlines his early childhood up to age 12, an only child to his mother, and his father, who died when he was a baby. He was eventually raised by his grandparents, who still lived in more traditional Shuswap ways. The chapter recounts his entry into residential school, his life there, and his illness as a result of hunger, malnutrition and medical abandonment at the school.
