In Chapter Five Barlow examines alternative approaches to the current framing of global commerce and business, which is dominated by the narratives of neoliberalism and corporate interests. She instead looks towards an alternative human-centred economy. The chapter discusses the historical precedents for economics bases on community and sustainability, Indigenous practices, the World Trade Organization Protest in Seattle 1999, ecosystem restoration projects, and sustainable agricultural reform. It includes an excerpt on hope from Nnimmo Bassey.
