A majority of the Supreme Court of Canada struck down mandatory minimum sentences for convictions for possessing prohibited or restricted firearms with readily accessible ammunition as constituting cruel or unusual treatment or punishment. The dissenting opinion argued that the hypothetical situations contemplated by the majority were speculative and not grounded in experience or common sense.
