Corpora and Translation

Beginning with the word processors and the term banks of the 1970s, translators have turned to computers for assistance with at least three different tasks: documentary and terminological research, translating itself, and physical production of the translation. As of the 1990s, electronic corpora have played a major role in the first of these tasks: translation-related research.

Roda P. Roberts
Roda P. Roberts, PhD, C. Tran., was a professor at the School of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Ottawa for twenty-seven years until her retirement in 2006. During that time, she was director of the school from 1979 to 1989. She has taught languages, translation, and interpretation at a number of universities in Canada, the United States, and India. In addition, she has trained translation and interpretation trainers in Canada, the United States, and Mexico and has served as curriculum consultant to various educational institutions. She has written numerous articles on translation theory, translator/ interpreter training, terminology, and lexicography. She is also the founding director of the Bilingual Canadian Dictionary Project, an interuniversity lexicographic project that has centres at the University of Ottawa, the University of Montreal, and Laval UniversityJacqueline Bossé-Andrieu, PhD, was a professor at the School of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Ottawa, where she taught translation, comparative stylistics, and French stylistics for thirty-four years until her retirement in 2006. She is the author of Exercices pratiques de français, Exercices pratiques de style/, and Abrégé des règles de grammaire et d’orthographe, and is a key member of the team working on the Bilingual Canadian Dictionary Project.
