Franco-Americans and Americanism
SECTION THREE - The reception of franco-americans
From: A Distinct Alien Race
$1.90
This chapter looks at Anglo-Protestant culture in the U.S. and the culture of Franco-Americans, and the tensions that emerged as Franco-Americans denied assimilation. The author argues that the Franco-Americans were among the first groups in the U.S. to challenge Anglo-conformity and the Anglo-Protestant mythos; their lack of interest in assimilation/Americanization among other factors caused tensions. The author examines a contemporary claim/conspiracy theory that "the Canadian French are the Chinese of the Eastern States," and backlash at this concept from Franco-Americans trying to defend their culture and place in American society.
