The French Revolution

New!

From: Myths of Modern History

$3.40

The book begins with the myth of the French Revolution, the “original

catastrophe” (Urkatastrofe, to use a term coined by German historians) of

modern history, and the wars that followed it, associated with Napoleon

Bonaparte. This chapter compares Maximilien Robespierre and Napoleon Bonaparte and how these figures and the history of the French Revolution has been twisted and mythologized, as well as examines the concept and reality of revolutions, arguing that revolutions tend to promote the cause of democracy, while wars often serve to inhibit, arrest and even reverse the democratization process.
