Borders have become a means through which states can dispose of unwanted migrants through deportation and award those deemed legitimate with permanent residency. This has led to the increased militarization of borders, the internalization of borders through detention and deportations and the externalization of borders through expanding the political and legal conception of state territory and thus militarization.
